HISTORY OF THE SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court was established on March 4th, 1789 but was not used for checks and balances purposes until much later in U.S History. There are many flags that popped into my head when I saw the YouTube videos. Many new things that I also learned throughout the two parts which were really interesting.

I have always loved that the Supreme Court is able to change subtle details of the constitution or moderate it just a little since the document is very old in age. What I also knew was the president was able to elect a judge, because it let other branches also have some say in what happens. This can be looked as a good thing or bad thing because it depends on the party you reign with and whether that judge will be able to fulfill his/her duty.
One thing that was interesting was the fact that a Justice can serve for more than 16 years, that was the first red flag that popped out to be me. The reason is because as time goes on, society modernizes, and many things change. This can be a conflict because a Justice has all the power when it comes to the Supreme Court and the cases, and to think that the same 9 voices will be in charge of making sure everything is fair in the constitution and regulating it for 16 years is a very controversial  concept.
--- At the same time though being a Justice is a very important job so the fact that there has been about 100 justices throughout U.S history is also a very important piece of information because you can tell they try to put the best of the best.
Another thing that raised a flag was the fact that they said it takes 5 years to forget that they are working there in order to do a better job. I think this might be a problem, it goes back to the thought that a Justice can serve for as long as they want, so for the first few years they can basically slack or not be qualified and prepared for the job as one would hope. I understand that you need time to adjust to things, but a lot of things happen in 5 years, for one a new president comes in every 4 years and then every two years we vote for congressmen again. If a person has that much power under their belt, the job should not be taken lightly, because we expect all branches to do their best work and foremost do for the people of our country.

Something I did enjoy was the partnership between all of the Justices. It goes to show that even when there are hard decisions to make, they try to compromise and help one another understand their perspective, which is something you don't see a lot in the government now a days because everyone is so stuck on parties and not the overall issues.

The First Amendment

You should be glad we have it On December 15, 1791 the United states adopted the first of the ten amendments that would be known as the Bill of Rights. The first amendment states, “ “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the  right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” . This amendment exists to this day and protects the American people from having certain freedoms taken away from them.  In the United States, we encourage our people to speak of anything they wish even if it is negative towards their government. It is written so that the government cannot interfere with our beliefs and the way we choose to express ourselves. Although we have this freedom, the first amendment does not protect those from putting ourselves or others in harm's way with our speech. This exception is not to i...

#RunwithMaud

AHMAUD ARBERY- Remember his name Background Ahmaud Arbery was going for a jog, like he tended to do normally. He thought it would be a regular day like always, but this jog turned out to be his last. On February 23, 2020, Arbery was chased down and shot by two white men, one of whom was a retired police officer and DA investigator. Gregory and Travis McMichael, father and son killed this innocent jogger because of his skin color. These men have been known to be racist but yet when the investigation was made, they weren't arrested or charged for the killing of Arbery. Instead they walked free for two months, after leaving an innocent man on the street, dead. Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vElX_sLt2NM  (Warning graphic) In a video that was leaked, it shows Arbery jogging and trying to get away from a truck, that had the McMichael's inside. The truck continued to follow the jogger and cornered him and when the jogger tried to run the other way he was shot. Stil...

5 Ways I Receive The News

WHAT NEWS SOURCES WORK FOR ME   Knowing about what's happening around the world or more locally should be a priority especially in the 21st century. So many things are changing and being updated that it has become very crucial to know and understand the issues in today's world. As a college student and a journalism major it's very important for me to be informed. With that being said sometimes it's hard to get your news with such a busy schedule that consists of office hours and nap time. Below you will find 5 different news sources that help me in different ways and why they're helpful. News (APP) The News app on my iPhone is always sending me notifications from Univision, The Washington Post, CNN, etc. Basically, all the news you need to know is at the tap of your fingertips. I highly recommend this when you don’t have the time to sit down and watch the news or look it up on the Internet. The app has all types of n...
