AHMAUD ARBERY- Remember his name

Background

Ahmaud Arbery was going for a jog, like he tended to do normally. He thought it would be a regular day like always, but this jog turned out to be his last.
On February 23, 2020, Arbery was chased down and shot by two white men, one of whom was a retired police officer and DA investigator. Gregory and Travis McMichael, father and son killed this innocent jogger because of his skin color. These men have been known to be racist but yet when the investigation was made, they weren't arrested or charged for the killing of Arbery. Instead they walked free for two months, after leaving an innocent man on the street, dead.

In a video that was leaked, it shows Arbery jogging and trying to get away from a truck, that had the McMichael's inside. The truck continued to follow the jogger and cornered him and when the jogger tried to run the other way he was shot. Still trying to fight for his life, he tried taking the gun away from one of the men and was shoot twice again. He was left bleeding on the street until police were called by neighbors.

This video has been around all over social media and has sparked major controversy between the black community and ignorant privileged people. You can clearly see who was at fault here but some people had comments like "why didn't he just talk to them", "why was he running" "they were just trying to see what was going" The community has not let these comments go without someone defending Arbery and the rights that he had and the rights that were taken just because of his skin color.

The Killers

Both men claim that there had been many break-ins around the neighborhood and the Arbery "fit the description" so they went after him convinced he was the suspect on the loose. There was a third man involved who was thought to have been driving the truck. All three of these men were finally arrested on May 7, 2020.

Activists/Social Media

From the moment the video was brought to the attention of Shaun King, an activist on social media, it was posted on all his platforms and began to receive thousands of comments and reposts, tweets, shares, etc. The black community was livid and with good reason, but they weren't so much surprised of what the outcome had been for two months. This isn't the first time someone dies because of prejudice and discrimination. There is a moment "Black Lives Matter" which revolves around African-American people being assaulted, beaten, and killed by police officers. So seeing that these two men which had backgrounds in the force were free was no shock. Although many become victims and nothing can be done for them, Arbery's family had had a different outcome.

The video has been seen by millions on people, and these people did not just sit there quiet, instead they started making phone calls to the local and federal figures involved in this case. One of these, is the D.A in charge of this case. People also started signing petitions and sharing Arbery story on all their platforms, because of this the three men were finally arrested and charged with murder.

Many athletes and celebrities also posted on how unfair the system was being with the murder of Aubrey. On May 8th there will be a national run of 2.23 miles to commemorate Aubrey and his mom, because he was born on May 8th in 1996 which was also Mother's Day.

The Outcome

There are many things that will result from this. One, people will be able to advocate more because they have been a witness of what advocating can do and how it can work. Privileged people will become more educated on these type of issues and learn how to help. The black community will have a voice, more now than ever. There will be justice for Arbery.

5 Things I Learned: Freshmen Year

My first year at HPU 1. GPA's in High School and College are completely different I remember coming into college and thinking that if I had a 4.2-3.8 through all of High School why would college be different. Now that I've been at HPU for two semesters, I can say that even maintaining a 2.0 which is what you need to be academically eligible is hard. When I was told that to keep my scholarship, I needed to have a 2.75 cumulative gap, inside my head, the thought that was running through was "who wouldn't be able to have a 2.75 that's a piece of cake." Halfway through first semester is when it hit me that It was harder than I thought. After completing my first semester and being placed on academic probation, I just thought about my scholarship and how I needed to do my best the following semester to keep it. It definitely humbled me and made me realize that GPA's aren't the same.  Another thing that was different with the whole gpa aspect is

The Partisan Press

Have we really changed? To answer this question, we first have to dive in deeper into what the Partisan Press is, in this article we are able to learn more about the partisan press and what it was like back in this era. The Partisan Press helped individuals get things done, what I mean by this is that the articles were written to help get the author's point across, it was biased. It was based on their views and agendas. This is a brilliant idea because you can get people to understand your perspective and see why you view certain things the way you do, but the downside of all of this, one could say is that people weren’t getting accurate information. What they received and were reading were opinions not facts. I feel that this was a bad era for journalism because things weren’t true and honest. Although it was a time where you can express what had to be said about the given topics, it harmed the communities overall because they were stuck with what they were given.    Even
