BREAKING NEWS.. OR IS IT?

Julian Assange is the founder of Wiki Leaks, a website that sheds light on confidential government information. Assange is a well-known whistleblower (He is not a part of the military) who had uncovered a whole new version of the United States, our military, and our government overall using videos and journalism as his weapon.

The video that made headlines on every news source was of U.S troops shooting at 17 civilians from a helicopter in Iraq. You can probably predict why this would mean bad news (no pun intended) for the U.S. It comes to no surprise that once the video was released the government was out to get Julian Assange.

Facts that will be helpful to you to understand more of this article

  • Julian Assange is not an American, in fact when he uploaded the video he was nowhere near U.S territory
  • Journalists around the world are divided when it comes to Assange's situation.
  • Assange is currently incarcerated.

Americans

The reason why many Americans were upset about the videos being released is because it makes a bad image for the Land of the Free. America prides itself in being patriotic and showing respect for the military, so since both the U.S troops and our government were "threatened" by someone that is not a citizen, it made some Americans hate Julian Assange. They don't want their country to have a bad reputation and be in the wrong but for how long and at what expense do we want that to be the scenario? That America is great and is never wrong. I'll let you answer that for yourself

The Government

When the video was leaked, the U.S government found a way to take away Assange's freedom with 17 charges of espionage. The Espionage Act prohibits citizens from releasing information that could affect the U.S and it is military during war times. Assange asked for asylum and went to Ecuador but it turns out the the U.S was spying on him the whole time. Now he is doing time in a country that is not his. Although he is an Australian citizen and was in Europe when he leaked the video- he was not on American Soil- Julian Assange is still facing many years behind bars and has done nearly a decade in jail.

The World- Divided

Many people stand with Julian Assange because he has doing his job, he was being a journalist. He was only opening everyone's eyes to what really happens in our military and how our system tries to cover it. This man's health and life is deteriorating before everyone's eyes and no one is helping.
Although many might not agree with what Assange has done, one thing that can be said is that our system is flawed and has been for a very long time.

Modern Journalism, same as always.

Penny Press, Yellow Journalism, and Muckrakers. The news that we receive today and the news Americans received in the 19th Century are not as different as one would think. Sure, we know have social media, youtube videos, and TV to receive up-to-date news but the overall forms of news haven't changed. Three journalism forms that took a stand in early America were the Penny Press, Yellow Journalism, and Muckrakers. Penny Press The Penny Press were newspapers that became available to the middle and working class beginning in the 1830's. They were from 1 cent , so it was quite affordable for people of the two lower classes. People were eager to receive what they thought was raw news, but instead were filled with sensationalized columns that had more fib than truth. Journalists and owners of these newspapers focused on the idea of pleasing its audience and essentially giving them "what they wanted", does this sound familiar yet? Although this form of newspapers wa...

The First Amendment

You should be glad we have it On December 15, 1791 the United states adopted the first of the ten amendments that would be known as the Bill of Rights. The first amendment states, “ “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the  right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” . This amendment exists to this day and protects the American people from having certain freedoms taken away from them.  In the United States, we encourage our people to speak of anything they wish even if it is negative towards their government. It is written so that the government cannot interfere with our beliefs and the way we choose to express ourselves. Although we have this freedom, the first amendment does not protect those from putting ourselves or others in harm's way with our speech. This exception is not to i...
