Journo Hero Numero Dos

Jorge Ramos

Background

Jorge Ramos was born on March 16, 1958 in New Mexico, Mexico. He is one of them most influential journalists in the Latinx community. Ramos graduated from Universidad Iberoamericana, one of the most prestigious schools in Latin America, here he received his bachelor’s degree in Communications. A few years later, Ramos came to the U.S has a student and received a master’s degree from the University of Miami in International Studies. He has two kids, one of which decided to follow in his footsteps-Paola Ramos- and has become a journalist who has served in the Obama administration and works for the network Vice. Jorge Ramos is also an agnostic, which shocked many in the Hispanic community, he says that as a child he was abused in the catholic schools he attended.

What makes him a hero/ His work?

Ramos has been an advocate for many people who don't always have a voice in the United States. Throughout his career he was met with many different political figures to discuss Hispanic issues and has at times called them out for their actions. A prime example of this is former president Barack Obama at an immigration forum in 2012, because Obama had broken a promise of giving immigrants a reform in his first year of presidency.
Jorge Ramos has interviewed many leaders of the world such as "Mitt Romney, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Harry Reid, Newt Gingrich, John McCain, John Edwards, Al Gore, George Bush Sr., John Kerry, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez, Felipe Calderon and dozens of Latin American presidents." This has helped the Hispanic community, a lot of which don't speak Spanish keep up with important news going on not only in the U.S but also around the world. During his time at Univision he has become the anchorman of Noticiero Univision (since 1986), the host of "Al Punto"-which discuses different topics and issues from recent events- and the host of "Show Me Something."
Aside from interviewing important people, Ramos has also covered historic events: Five wars and witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, the disintegration of the former Soviet Union, the attacks of 9/11 and the catastrophe of hurricane Katrina. He was also detained by the Venezuelan government when trying to have an interview with dictator Nicolás Maduro. While in Venezuela, his camera equipment, video footage, and phones were confiscated, and he was later deported.
In 2015, Ramos had an altercation with president Donald Trump, after trying to ask a question Ramos was kicked out of the press room but was later to come back in. This sparked even more controversy for Donald Trump within the Hispanic community because Jorge Ramos is very well-known and loved by the community.
Author/Newspaper

He writes for Univision in his weekly column and also has a website where he also writes, but more sore opinions on events happening around the world.

Awards

Ramos has received 8 Emmy awards because of his journalism. He has also received awards from Radio Television Digital News Association, The National Press Foundation, Journalists' Club of Mexico, Commonwealth Club of California, Columbia University, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. He was also given an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree from the University of Richmond.

Ellen Browning Scripps Why is she a hero? Ellen Browning Scripps was born on October 18, 1836 in London. Throughout her life she experienced a great deal of hardship at a young age. Her mother passed away when she was just 4 years old. After this tragedy, her, her father and the rest of her siblings moved from England to the United states. This was in 1844. She was born one of 13 kids and was the only one that continued her education to a higher level. Although she was the only one to receive a higher education, she later helped her siblings to better their careers with what she accomplished. For example, for many years her career was teaching, but later on one of her brothers started a newspaper called “ The Detroit Evening News” in 1873 and Scripps decided to invest into the newspaper. She later invested in her other brother’s newspaper “The Cleveland Press.” In addition to her investments, she also contributed columns as well. Journalist Side Aside from investin...

The Partisan Press

Have we really changed? To answer this question, we first have to dive in deeper into what the Partisan Press is, in this article we are able to learn more about the partisan press and what it was like back in this era. The Partisan Press helped individuals get things done, what I mean by this is that the articles were written to help get the author's point across, it was biased. It was based on their views and agendas. This is a brilliant idea because you can get people to understand your perspective and see why you view certain things the way you do, but the downside of all of this, one could say is that people weren’t getting accurate information. What they received and were reading were opinions not facts. I feel that this was a bad era for journalism because things weren’t true and honest. Although it was a time where you can express what had to be said about the given topics, it harmed the communities overall because they were stuck with what they were given.   ...
