My first year at HPU 1. GPA's in High School and College are completely different I remember coming into college and thinking that if I had a 4.2-3.8 through all of High School why would college be different. Now that I've been at HPU for two semesters, I can say that even maintaining a 2.0 which is what you need to be academically eligible is hard. When I was told that to keep my scholarship, I needed to have a 2.75 cumulative gap, inside my head, the thought that was running through was "who wouldn't be able to have a 2.75 that's a piece of cake." Halfway through first semester is when it hit me that It was harder than I thought. After completing my first semester and being placed on academic probation, I just thought about my scholarship and how I needed to do my best the following semester to keep it. Why Corona Why?? My experience with online classes has been a very bumpy road. From procrastination, to sleeping ALL day, to finally getting my work done. It was a very long half-semester to say the least. COVID-19 is a pandemic that has killed over a million people around the world. Civil War and The Press Lincoln is known as one of the greatest U.S Presidents (Williams, 2004) but there is one thing that can make many people question that statement.  Throughout the Civil War, there was controversy on what the press was able to write about, they were limited. There was a period where parts of the constitution were restricted, this included  freedom of speech and freedom of the press. "abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." (First Amendment) Lincoln's reasoning for limiting what journalists  wrote about was in a sense a great thing because it freed slaves and he was able to carry out his agenda. On the other hand, this was indeed very unconstitutional because he limited the first amendment for his own advantage. It depicts the relationship between the press and the government, this was during the time when Joseph McCarthy was a senator.  Edward R. Murrow was the journalist televising McCarthy's accusations of communism. Transhistoral  The term Transhistoric means the  " quality of holding throughout human history, not merely within the frame of reference of a particular form of society at a particular stage of historical development" . A simpler version of this definition for me would be something that stays throughout time, something that you see repeatedly over and over again in different periods and eras of history. AHMAUD ARBERY- Remember his name Background Ahmaud Arbery was going for a jog, like he tended to do normally. He thought it would be a regular day like always, but this jog turned out to be his last. On February 23, 2020, Arbery was chased down and shot by two white men, one of whom was a retired police officer and DA investigator. Gregory and Travis McMichael, father and son killed this innocent jogger because of his skin color. These men have been known to be racist but yet when the investigation was made, they weren't arrested or charged for the killing of Arbery. Instead they walked free for two months, after leaving an innocent man on the street, dead. Jorge Ramos      Background   Jorge Ramos was born on March 16, 1958 in New Mexico, Mexico. He is one of them most influential journalists in the Latinx community. Ramos graduated from Universidad Iberoamericana, one of the most prestigious schools in Latin America, here he received his bachelor’s degree in Communications. A few years later, Ramos came to the U.S has a student and received a master’s degree from the University of Miami in  International Studies. He has two kids, one of which decided to follow in his footsteps-Paola Ramos- and has become a journalist who has served in the Obama administration and works for the network  Vice . Penny Press The Penny Press were newspapers that became available to the middle and working class beginning in the 1830's. They were from 1 cent , so it was quite affordable for people of the two lower classes. Ellen Browning Scripps Why is she a hero? Ellen Browning Scripps was born on October 18, 1836 in London. Throughout her life she experienced a great deal of hardship at a young age. Her mother passed away when she was just 4 years old. After this tragedy, her, her father and the rest of her siblings moved from England to the United states. This was in 1844. She was born one of 13 kids and was the only one that continued her education to a higher level. Although she was the only one to receive a higher education, she later helped her siblings to better their careers with what she accomplished. For example, for many years her career was teaching, but later on one of her brothers started a newspaper called “ The Detroit Evening News” in 1873 and Scripps decided to invest into the newspaper. The Supreme Court was established on March 4th, 1789 but was not used for checks and balances purposes until much later in U.S History. There are many flags that popped into my head when I saw the YouTube videos. Many new things that I also learned throughout the two parts which were really interesting.  I have always loved that the Supreme Court is able to change subtle details of the constitution or moderate it just a little since the document is very old in age. What I also knew was the president was able to elect a judge, because it let other branches also have some say in what happens. This can be looked as a good thing or bad thing because it depends on the party you reign with and whether that judge will be able to fulfill his/her duty. One thing that was interesting was the fact that a Justice can serve for more than 16 years, that was the first red flag that popped out to be me. To answer this question, we first have to dive in deeper into what the Partisan Press is, in this article we are able to learn more about the partisan press and what it was like back in this era. The Partisan Press helped individuals get things done, what I mean by this is that the articles were written to help get the author's point across, it was biased. It was based on their views and agendas. This is a brilliant idea because you can get people to understand your perspective and see why you view certain things the way you do, but the downside of all of this, one could say is that people weren’t getting accurate information. What they received and were reading were opinions not facts. I feel that this was a bad era for journalism because things weren’t true and honest. This amendment exists to this day and protects the American people from having certain freedoms taken away from them.  In the United States, we encourage our people to speak of anything they wish even if it is negative towards their government. It is written so that the government cannot interfere with our beliefs and the way we choose to express ourselves. WHAT NEWS SOURCES WORK FOR ME   Knowing about what's happening around the world or more locally should be a priority especially in the 21st century. So many things are changing and being updated that it has become very crucial to know and understand the issues in today's world. As a college student and a journalism major it's very important for me to be informed. With that being said sometimes it's hard to get your news with such a busy schedule that consists of office hours and nap time. Below you will find 5 different news sources that help me in different ways and why they're helpful. News (APP) The News app on my iPhone is always sending me notifications from Univision, The Washington Post, CNN, etc. Basically, all the news you need to know is at the tap of your fingertips. I highly recommend this when you don’t have the time to sit down and watch the news or look it up on the Internet. The app has all types of news outlets and different articles
